Time: Villain, Illusion, or Friend?

This text offers reflections on how time shapes us, challenges us, and teaches us how to live.

This unpredictable thing we call time, here and there,
passing by in a way we can’t even perceive,
yet somehow it seems to sit and watch us —
especially during the most delicate moments of our lives.

Time, this silent entity, takes so much from us — and brings so much too.
Time takes us to life, and time brings us into life.
It tears down castles and brings evolution.
It takes away those we love… and brings new loves into our lives.

William Shakespeare once said:

“Time is very slow for those who wait, very fast for those who are scared, very long for those who lament, very short for those who celebrate, but for those who love, time is eternal.”

Time heals our wounds and eventually rewards us with old age.
Curiously, it always seems to run when something feels good,
when we’re delighting in life, when everything is flowing.
But when things get tough, time seems to stop, watching us closely,
almost as if it enjoys seeing us uncomfortable.

Why does it do that?
What’s up with time?

Saint Augustine once said:

“What, then, is time? If no one asks me, I know; if I wish to explain it to one who asks, I do not know.”

Is time a villain, or is it a friend?
Albert Einstein said:

“Time is an illusion.”

But is it really?

Is time an illusion when we’re stuck in traffic, late for an important meeting?
Is it an illusion when we watch our children grow, and in the blink of an eye, they no longer fit in our arms?
Is it an illusion when we look in the mirror and see a face that now carries stories in every line?

I find it fascinating how time seems to drag when I’m doing a dull, unfulfilling job.
And how do I deal with it?
I listen to music. It either speeds up time or at least makes me forget about it, dissolving the feeling of being stuck.
(Of course, only when the job allows it.)

But when I want to hold on to it, when I’m living something incredible,
with the people I love the most,
the way I find to hold time is by being present.
If it’s good, pay attention to the details.
Pay attention to what’s around you, feel the breeze, listen to the sounds, notice the scents.
Feel everything with all your senses.
You will see that you can live that moment much more intensely and fully.

And you, how do you feel time passing in your life?
Do you see it as a villain, stealing your best moments, or as a friend, teaching you to value every second?
Have you learned to pause and feel time, or does it just slip through your fingers without you even noticing?

I don’t see time as a villain.
I see time as a great friend.
Time has brought me maturity, it has brought me to where I am now.
And if I am happy today, it is because everything I have lived has shaped who I am,
and I know time has been behind it all.

And for you, what is time?

The End 🌹
